Premier League 2024/25: Gary O’Neil and Russell Martin get the sack

Due to disappointing performances, Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O’Neil and Southampton boss Russell Martin have been dismissed following their respective sides’ defeats in the recent Gameweek on Saturday.

O’Neil and Co were beaten in a chaotic game at Molineux Stadium by Ipswich Town, while Martin and his boys suffered a humiliating loss at St Mary’s Stadium to Tottenham Hotspur. These defeats seem to have been the final straw for the two clubs.

Gary O’Neil has endured a difficult season at Wolves, struggling to deliver consistent performances. So far, his side has conceded 40 goals—the most by any Premier League team this season. With only two wins and 11 losses to their name, Wolves find themselves in the relegation zone, alongside Southampton.

Recent incidents involving Wolves players cast further doubt on the club’s morale, indicating all has not been well in the dressing room. Just days after Mario Lemina was stripped of the captaincy following an altercation with West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen in the aftermath of a loss to the Hammers, Rayan Aït-Nouri was sent off for a scuffle with Ipswich’s Wes Burns at Molineux on Saturday.

The news of O’Neil’s dismissal followed shortly after the loss against Ipswich Town.

In a statement released by Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, club Chairman Jeff Shi said:

We’re very grateful to Gary for all of his effort, dedication and hard work during his time at the club, and we wish him and his team the best of luck for the future.

Later in the day, Southampton parted ways with Russell Martin after his side was dealt with a demolition job by Tottenham Hotspur. With 13 defeats and 36 goals shipped in, Southampton lie at the bottom of the table, nine points adrift of safety.

Southampton secured promotion to the Premier League in this year after winning the Championship playoffs and with a solid squad of players. Expectations were high for them in the English topflight. However, despite the talent at their disposal, the Saints have found themselves struggling.

A key factor in their disappointing season has been Martin’s stubbornness in sticking to the same tactics, refusing to adapt to the challenges of Premier League football. This failure to evolve has now cost him his job.

Southampton also confirmed that their U21 boss, Simon Rusk, will take charge of the first team on an interim basis, with the EFL Cup quarter-final against Liverpool coming up on Wednesday.

A statement released by Southampton FC confirmed Russell Martin’s dismissal:

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Russell and his staff for all the hard work and dedication they have given the club on and off the pitch over the last 18 months. Everyone connected with Southampton FC will always have fantastic memories of last season, especially the play-off Final win in May.
