With Afghanistan needing to win this tie in order to secure a semi-final spot, their bowlers delivered to earn the team an eight-run win in a rain-affected game.

The Afghans batted first and put on 115 runs, a score that many would’ve considered not big enough. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the only player who stuck around and made 43 off 55, while Rishad Hossain was the pick of the bowlers, picking up three wickets for 26 runs.

With the game reduced to 19 overs, Bangladesh needed to chase 114 in 12.1 overs to find a place in the semis. Despite a fast start, they lost three wickets in the first 23 runs and continued to consistently lose wickets through the middle phase as Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad put on a show for the fans.

Liton Das, who had opened the batting, played all the way till the end but unfortunately had to see his tail fall one by one. Naveen-ul-Haq picked up the two final wickets in the 18th over to seal Afghanistan’s place in the semi-final, marking the country’s first time making it to the final four of a World Cup.

First innings: Afghanistan 115/5 in 20 overs
Second innings: Bangladesh 105 in 17.5 overs (DLS target was 114 in 19 overs)
