As confirmed via a social media announcement by Liverpool FC, Mohamed Salah has renewed his contract with the Reds and will stay at Anfield beyond the current season.
At the club since 2017, Salah has been one of the most consistent performers for Liverpool. The Egypt international has won all major club honours with them and was part of one of the most feared front threes alongside Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino. Even after Jürgen Klopp and the others left, he has maintained his world-class levels. This season, he has registered a massive 32 goals and 22 assists in 45 appearances in all competitions.
While the duration and wage details have not been disclosed by the club, it is believed Salah will stay at Liverpool at least until the end of 2026/27 season.
Speaking on the extension, the 32-year-old said:
“Of course I’m very excited. We have a great team now. Before also we had a great team. But I signed because I think we have a chance to win other trophies and enjoy my football.
“It’s great, I had my best years here. I played eight years, hopefully it’s going to be 10. Enjoying my life here, enjoying my football. I had the best years in my career.
“I would like to say to [the fans], I am very, very happy to be here. I signed here because I believe we can win a lot of big trophies together. Keep supporting us and we’ll give it our best, and hopefully in the future we’re going to win more trophies.“
Salah’s contract renewal has come as a major boost. For most of the season, the speculation regarding his future had been a major point of concern for the Liverpool fans.
However, a key question now arises: have Liverpool made the right decision by offering a two-year extension to an ageing player.
In my opinion, Salah staying for two more years makes a lot of sense. Firstly, if we look at his numbers, he has been stellar this season, topping both the goals and assists charts in the Premier League. Secondly, his fitness and availability make him a very attractive prospect—he hardly misses games. Thirdly, looking at his consistency over the past eight years and his numbers this season, it is clear he still has a lot of gas left in the tank to make vital contributions.
Moreover, next season is shaping up to be a pivotal one for Liverpool, with significant changes expected within the squad. In light of that, it makes even more sense for them to retain one of their most experienced players who could guide and support the incoming talent.
That said, it’s also crucial for Liverpool to start planning for the future—especially when it comes to Salah. Bringing in a potential successor who can learn from him, step in when needed, and allow Salah to get some rest would go a long way in ensuring he maintains peak performance without being overworked.
