It was another exciting matchweek in the 2024/25 Premier League season this part weekend, with last season’s managing comfortable wins.
There were a few surprises as well, with Manchester United’s loss at the Amex Stadium and Crystal Palace losing at home to West Ham.
Playing at home, Tottenham thrashed a dismal Everton and Fulham edged past Leicester City.
There were goals galore at the Etihad and Molineux and a dramatic late goal denied for Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
Here are all the results from Matchweek 2 of the 2024/25 Premier League
Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 Manchester United
This was an exhilarating end-to-end affair with both teams playing aggressive football. Danny Welbeck opened the score for Brighton in the 32nd minute, which was cancelled by Amad Diallo’s goal in the 60th minute. Poised at 1-1 and heading towards a draw, Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler made some inspiring late substitutions to help his side grab all three points, with João Pedro scoring a stoppage-time winner.
Manchester City 4-1 Ipswich Town
Newly-promoted Ipswich Town had the toughest task this week, playing away at the home of the defending champions. They started brightly, though, opening the score with Sammie Szmodics in the seventh minute and stunning the Man City fans into silence. However, the champions responded like they always do by scoring quick goals through Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne. Haaland completed his hattrick by scoring in the 88th minute to secure comfortable win for City.
Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 Everton
Tottenham shrugged off the disappointment of last week and brought their A-game to the fore against a dismal Everton side. They blew the Toffees away with their aggressive intent, with Ives Bissouma and Son Heung-min scoring two first-half goals. The Lilywhites continued their impressive performance in the second half as well, scoring two more goals through Cristian Romero and Son to complete a 4-0 rout.
Crystal Palace 0-2 West Ham United
Crystal Palace had a poor showing in their first home game of the season as they lost 2-0 to West Ham. Initially, though, they looked the better of the two sides and came close to scoring, with Eberechi Eze’s strike hitting the crossbar, but the Hammers grew into the game and scored two goals from Tomáš Soucek and Jarrod Bowen in the second-half to take home the three points.
Fulham 2-1 Leicester City
Emile Smith Rowe had a great start to life at Craven Cottage as he opened his Fulham account with a goal in the 18th minute. Leicester then equalised through a controversial goal by Wout Faes in the 38th minute, which was initially denied but later given by VAR. Alex Iwobi then scored a late winner for the Cottagers to give them their first win of the season.

Southampton 0-1 Nottingham Forest
Forest travelled to St Mary’s for their second game of the season. The newly-promoted Southampton, playing their first home game, couldn’t provide any excitement to their fans as they mustered only one attempt on goal in comparison to Forest’s eight. Morgan Gibbs-White scored in the 70th minute to give Forest the much-deserved lead along with the three points.
Aston Villa 0-2 Arsenal
Title contenders Arsenal travelled to Villa Park in a tough away game against Unai Emery’s men. The Gunners started the game well, but it was Villa’s Ollie Watkins who scuffed the best chance of the first half to put his side ahead. A great tactical battle ensued in the second half, but Villa again missed chances and Arsenal ultimately capitalised on the ones they had to score two goals through Leandro Trossard and Thomas Partey.
Bournemouth 1-1 Newcastle
Bournemouth wanted to mark their 125th anniversary with a win against Newcastle at home. The Cherries started well with a goal from Marcus Tavernier in the first half and looked set for a win, but a 76th minute Anthony Gordon goal cancelled their opener. Bournemouth fans went wild when they thought that Dango Outtara’s dramatic stoppage-time winner had won them the game, but to their dismay the goal was ruled out by a controversial VAR decision for handball, ending the game in a draw.
Wolves 2-6 Chelsea
Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea played an entertaining game with goals galore at Molineux Stadium. The game started on equal footing, with Matheus Cunha cancelling out Nicolas Jackson’s early opener for Chelsea. Cole Palmer and Jørgen Strand Larsen swapped strikes to end the first-half 2-2. However, Chelsea’s attacking prowess came to the fore in the second half when Noni Madueke scored a quick hattrick to turn the game in the Blues’ favour. João Félix piled more misery on Wolves with a goal in the 80th minute to bring about the 6-2 score line.
Liverpool 2-0 Brentford
Liverpool manager Arne Slot’s first game at Anfield began in the best way possible with a comfortable 2-0 win against Brentford. The Reds looked in control from the word go and opened the scoring through a counter-attacking effort from Luis Díaz in the 13th minute. Liverpool controlled the game well but missed chances to double their lead in the first half. The second half saw more of the same as they changed gears and attacked even more, which ultimately resulted in a second goal from Mo Salah in the 70th minute, Díaz turning provider this time. Brentford had very few chances at goal and the Liverpool defence looked solid throughout the game to take home a much-deserved clean sheet.
