Looking at the big tournaments on the 2026 tennis calendar

As the new year approaches, it’s not just the four Grand Slams of the tennis calendar that entertain massive crowds and bring excitement and fanfare. There are many tour-level tournaments as well that gain attention across the world.

The men’s tour-level events are conducted by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), while the women’s tour-level events are conducted by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).

Apart from the four majors, namely the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open, ATP and WTA events are divided into several categories: Masters 1000, 500, and 250 levels, along with the year-end ATP and WTA Finals. Other levels include the Challenger Tour, while for senior players there is a Champions Tour as well.

Here, we take a look at the most popular annual ATP and WTA events of the current tennis calendar.

WTA Qatar Open

The WTA Qatar Open (officially named “Qatar TotalEnergies Open”) is a premier WTA 1000 tournament and part of the Middle East swing. Its 2026 edition is scheduled to be held from February 8 to 14, 2026, on the outdoor hard courts of the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha.

The tournament holds competition in two categories: Women’s Singles and Women’s Doubles.

Rotterdam Open

The Rotterdam Open (dubbed through sponsorship as “ABN AMRO Open”) is an ATP 500 tournament and one of the most popular indoor hard-court events. Its 2026 edition will be held from February 9 to 15, 2026, at the Rotterdam Ahoy.

The tournament holds competition in two categories: Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles.

Indian Wells Open

The Indian Wells Open (officially “BNP Paribas Open” for sponsorship reasons) is an ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tournament held annually in Indian Wells, California.

Next year, this outdoor hard-court tournament will be held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden from March 1 to 15, 2026.

The tournament has four events, which include Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, and Women’s Doubles categories.

Miami Open

The Miami Open is an ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tournament held annually in Miami, Florida. Also an outdoor hard-court tournament, its next edition is scheduled to be held from March 15 to 29, 2026, at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

The tournament features four categories: Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, and Women’s Doubles.

Monte-Carlo Masters

The (Rolex) Monte-Carlo Masters is an ATP Masters 1000 tournament held annually in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, which borders Monaco.

The Monte-Carlo Masters is an outdoor clay-court tournament, the next edition of which is to be held from April 4 to 12, 2026, at the Monte Carlo Country Club.

The tournament features two categories: Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles.

Madrid Open

The (Mutua) Madrid Open is an ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tournament held every year in Madrid, Spain.

The next edition of this outdoor clay-court tournament will be held from April 20 to May 3, 2026, at La Caja Mágica in Manzanares Park San Fermín, Madrid.

The tournament invites participation in four categories: Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, and Women’s Doubles.

Italian Open | Rome Masters

The Italian Open or the Rome Masters (officially the Internazionali BNL d’Italia), is an ATP Masters 1000 and a WTA 1000 event and an outdoor clay-court tournament.

The next edition of the Italian Open will be held from April 28 to May 17, 2026, at Foro Italico, Rome.
The tournament consists of four categories: Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, and Women’s Doubles.

Queen’s Club Championships

The Queen’s Club Championships, officially the HSBC Championships, is an ATP 500 and WTA 500 tournament held in London. It is treated as a warm-up event for Wimbledon, which follows immediately.

An outdoor grass-court tournament, the next edition of the Queen’s Club Championships will be held from June 6 to 21, 2026, at the Queen’s Club in Kensington, London.

This is one of the oldest tennis tournaments, having kicked off in 1881. It features four categories: Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, and Women’s Doubles.

Washington DC Open

The Washington DC Open, officially the Mubadala Citi DC Open, is an ATP 500 and WTA 500 tournament. It is an outdoor hard-court tournament, the next edition of which is scheduled to be held from July 25 to August 2, 2026, at the HG FitzGerald Tennis Center in Rock Creek Park, Washington, DC.

This is the only combined 500-level hard-court event on the calendar, featuring four categories: Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, and Women’s Doubles.

Canadian Open

The Canadian Open (officially the “National Bank Open presented by Rogers”) is an ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tournament. It is an outdoor hard-court tournament, whose venue alternates between Toronto and Montreal.

The next men’s edition of the Canadian Open will be held from August 1 to 13, 2026, at the IGA Stadium in Montreal, Quebec, while the women’s tournament will be held from August 1 to 13, 2026, at the Sobeys Stadium in Toronto, Ontario. The men’s tournament is held in Montreal in even-numbered years, while the women’s tournament is held in Toronto. During odd-numbered years, the two swap venues.

After Wimbledon, the Canadian Open is the second-oldest active tournament on the tennis calendar and currently features four categories: Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, and Women’s Doubles.

Cincinnati Open

The Cincinnati Open is an ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tournament played on the outdoor hard courts of the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio. Its 2026 edition will be held from August 11 to 23.

The Cincinnati Open is the oldest tennis tournament in the US and the third largest in the country after the US Open and the Indian Wells Open. It features four categories: Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, and Women’s Doubles.

China Open

The China Open is an outdoor hard-court tournament held at the National Tennis Center in Beijing. A WTA 1000 and ATP 500 tournament, its next edition is scheduled to be held between September 30 and October 11, 2026.

The tournament features four categories: Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, and Women’s Doubles. The ranking points differ for WTA and ATP players due to it being an ATP 500 and a WTA 1000 event.

Paris Masters

The (Rolex) Paris Masters is the last ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the year. An indoor hard-court event, played at La Défense Arena in Nanterre, France, its next edition will be held from October 31 to November 8, 2026.

It is the largest indoor tennis tournament in the world and features Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles categories.

WTA Finals

The WTA Finals features only the top eight women’s singles and doubles players in the world rankings, who compete for the coveted year-end trophy. This event is second only to the four majors in importance on the WTA Tour.

The eight singles and doubles players are divided into two groups, with the top two from each group qualifying to the semi-finals.

Next year’s WTA Finals will be held from November 7 to 14 at the King Saud University Indoor Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

ATP Finals

Similar to the WTA Finals, the (Nitto) ATP Finals is one of the most prestigious tournaments on the ATP Tour, preceded only by the four majors. The ATP Finals features the top eight–ranked men’s singles and doubles players in the world competing for the year-end trophy.

The format is similar to the WTA Finals, with the eight singles and doubles players divided into two groups, with the top two from each group qualifying for the semi-finals.

The next edition of this indoor hard-court tournament will be held from November 15 to 22, 2026, at the Inalpi Arena in Turin, Italy.
