UEFA Euro 2024: Day 5 Match Reviews

Day 5 of UEFA Euro 2024 provided some thrilling encounters for the neutral fans.

The day began with Portugal’s hard-fought victory against Czechia. Croatia then played out a shock draw against Albania, while Germany made it back-to-back wins in the tournament by defeating Hungary.

Euro 2024 Match 12: Portugal 2-1 Czechia

Portugal found it fairly difficult in their opening Euro 2024 encounter against Czechia. After a frustrating first half, it was the Czechs who snuck ahead through Lukáš Provod in the 62nd minute.

The Portuguese found an equaliser seven minutes later thanks to an own goal from Robin Hranác. After digging deep, it was substitute Francisco Conceição who scored for his team a stoppage-time winner to snatch all three points.

Portugal enjoyed 74% possession and took 19 shots compared to their opposition’s five. Cristiano Ronaldo and Co found the target on eight occasions throughout the contest.

Euro 2024 Match 13: Croatia 2-2 Albania

Croatia are yet to get going in this year’s Euros, as they were frustrated yet again. Albania managed to take an early lead in this one through Qazim Laci in the 11th minute. After fighting hard, two goals in the second half put the Croatians in front. However, it was heartbreak once more as Albania struck late in stoppage time thanks to Klaus Gjasula, the man who had netted an own goal at the other end a while before.

In this match, Croatia had more of the ball (67% possession) and took 22 shots compared to Albania’s 15. Luka Modric’s side tested the opposition goalkeeper on 10 occasions while facing seven shots on target themselves.

Croatia are now last in Group B after two matches, and it looks like they could be heading out of the competition in the first round itself.

Euro 2024 Match 14: Germany 2-0 Hungary

Germany are now in a great position in Group A, but their victory over Hungary did not come easy. After a fairly even first 20 minutes of the game, Jamal Musiala put his side ahead in the 22nd minute. Hungary continued to apply pressure in the second half, but their hopes were dampened after Ilkay Gündogan doubled his team’s lead in the 67th minute, which turned out to be the final goal in this match.

The Germans kept 70% possession and attempted 19 shots, with seven of those finding the target. Meanwhile, Hungary managed 11 shots, out of which four tested Manuel Neuer.
