With the current Premier League season drawn to a close, we’ve seen a mix of storylines unfold. Some players maintained impressive consistency, a few unexpected names exceeded expectations, while several top-class stars failed to live up to their reputations.

Here, we take a look at the top five FPL assets in all positions.

Forwards

1. Alexander Isak | Newcastle United | 211 points

The Magpies’ marksman has been in phenomenal form this season, having scored 23 goals and bagged six assists in 34 games. He has been vital to Newcastle securing a top-five finish and also one of the architects of ending their 70-year trophy drought, as they won the League Cup this season.

Even though his transfer fee in the FPL was on the higher side at £9.4m, the Swede has more than made up for it with the points he has accumulated. He was selected by 49.4% FPL teams this season, which is the highest for any forward player in the league.

2. Chris Wood | Nottingham Forest | 200 points

Chris Wood has been one of the surprise packages of the season. The tall Kiwi forward has been a major reason for Nottingham Forest finishing inside the top eight, scoring 20 goals and providing three assists in 36 games this season.

Wood fetched a decent transfer fee of £7.2m and is the fourth-highest scorer in the league this season. Those who trusted the lanky New Zealander must have scored major points.

3. Ollie Watkins | Aston Villa | 186 points

Ollie Watkins is the third-highest scoring forward in the FPL. The Villa forward has shown spectacular form, scoring 16 goals and bagging eight assists in 38 games. He was crucial to Villa coming close to Champions League qualification despite a topsy-turvy season. Villa will play in the Europa League, though.

Though he was priced slightly high at £9.1m, keeping Watkins in the team must have fetched big points.

4. Yoane Wissa | Brentford | 175 points

Brentford forward Yoane Wissa has been part of one of the best front threes in the league this season. Alongside Bryan Mbeumo and Kevin Schade, the DR Congo international has scored 19 goals and provided four assists in 35 games.

Priced at £6.9m, Wissa has been an absolute steal for those who trusted him enough to keep him in their FPL teams.

5. Erling Haaland | Manchester City | 181 points

With Manchester City not performing up to their usual high standards, and despite being out with an injury, Haaland still managed to be City’s best player. In 31 games, he registered 22 goals and three assists. He has been the player City have relied on to score the bulk of their goals.

Priced at a hefty £14.9m, he might not have performed as well as in previous seasons, but he still proved to be a massive FPL asset when in form.

Midfielders

1. Mohamed Salah | Liverpool | 332 points

PL winners Liverpool’s “Egyptian king” has been in exceptional form this season. Even though Salah is one of the top point-getters in the FPL every season, his stats have been out of this world this season. The Egyptian winger has scored 29 goals and provided 18 assists in 38 games this season.

Even though Salah is one of the most high-priced players in the FPL, with a value of £13.6m, he was selected by 66.3% of FPL teams — the highest for any player in the league — as he rarely disappoints.

2. Bryan Mbuemo | Brentford | 223 points

The Brentford winger has been a man on a mission this season, scoring 20 goals and bagging seven assists in 38 games. The talented Cameroonian has been one of the reasons for the Bees being in the top half of the table, having even been in with a shout for European qualification.

Priced at a decent £8.3m in FPL, Mbeumo has been a brilliant option up top for all FPL enthusiasts who decided to take a punt on him.

3. Cole Palmer | Chelsea | 211 points

Cole Palmer is another bankable player that most keep in their FPL teams. The English midfielder started the season well but lost his form in the middle. Yet, he managed to bag 15 goals and eight assists in 37 games this season. Thanks to Palmer, Chelsea have secured Champions League football for next season.

The English midfielder is priced at a relatively high £10.5m, but he has been worth the amount with his consistent performances most Gameweeks.

4. Jarrod Bowen | West Ham United | 193 points

While the Hammers have had one of their worst seasons in recent years, it’s thanks to their captain Jarrod Bowen that they have escaped relegation. Even without much support from his teammates, Bowen has scored 13 goals and bagged eight assists in 34 games this season.

The England international is priced at a decent £7.8m and has been a great asset for the ones who kept him in their teams.

5. Luis Díaz | Liverpool | 183 points

The Colombian winger has been a great presence on the left wing for Liverpool this season. Though Salah has taken most of the plaudits, Díaz has quietly had a superb campaign himself, scoring 13 goals and bagging five assists in 36 games.

Díaz is priced at a decent £7.5m in the FPL and has been a consistent performer for those who included him in their teams.

Defenders

1. Josko Gvardiol | Manchester City | 153 points

Though Manchester City missed out on the PL and CL titles and struggled massively this season, Josko Gvardiol at left-back remained one of their top performers. The Croatian defender also registered five goals while helping his side keep 11 clean sheets.

Priced on the higher side for a defender — at £6.5m — Gvardiol has been worth it, standing second among the top FPL defenders and featuring in 38.6% of teams — the highest for any defender this season.

2. Trent Alexander-Arnold | Liverpool | 148 points

The Liverpool right-back is top of the FPL charts in the defenders list. Alexander-Arnold has been critical to Liverpool winning the league, scoring three goals and bagging six assists in 32 games this season. He also helped the Reds’ defence keep 13 clean sheets.

Priced on the higher side for a defender — at £7.2m — the Englishman has been a consistent performer in the back line and delivered points for those who kept him in their teams.

3. Nikola Milenkovic | Nottingham Forest | 145 points

One of Nottingham Forest’s summer signings, Nikola Milenkovic turned out to be quite a revelation this season. The Serbian defender has been critical to a resolute Forest back line, scoring five goals and providing two assists in 37 games, while also helping the Tricky Trees keep 13 clean sheets.

Priced at a reasonable £5.2m, Milenkovic has been an absolute bargain this season.

4. Virgil van Dijk | Liverpool | 142 points

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is one of the usual suspects on this list. The Dutch centre-back has been like a wall at the back for his side yet again, scoring three goals and providing one assist in 37 games this season, while also helping his team keep the highest number of clean sheets in the PL this season (14).

Priced on the higher side for a defender — at £6.7m — Van Dijk is a sure-shot option for getting your FPL team solid points every season.

5. Daniel Muñoz | Crystal Palace | 142 points

Crystal Palace fullback Daniel Muñoz has been phenomenal on the right side of the defence this season. The Colombian defender has been an absolute menace down the flank, scoring four goals and registering five assists in 37 games. He has also helped the Eagles keep 11 clean sheets.

Priced at a reasonable £5.2m, Muñoz has offered great value for money this season.

Goalkeepers

1. Jordan Pickford | Everton | 158 points

Everton’s saviour time and time again, the England shot-stopper has been their best player despite the team being underwhelming yet again. If not for Pickford’s exceptional goalkeeping, Everton could have been relegated. Pickford kept 11 clean sheets in 38 games this season with a save percentage of 73%. He also had an assist to his name.

Priced at £5.2m, Pickford has been a consistent option between the sticks for FPL team owners who trusted the veteran England international.

2. Matz Sels | Nottingham Forest | 150 points

Nottingham Forest’s unexpectedly high position in the league table has also been due to the superb performances of their first-choice goalkeeper, Matz Sels. The veteran Belgian won the Golden Glove with 13 clean sheets in 38 games and a save percentage of 73.9%.

Priced at a decent £5.2m, the Forest goalkeeper has surprised many and been a reliable option for FPL enthusiasts this season.

3. David Raya | Arsenal | 142 points

Last season’s Golden Glove winner, David Raya, has been consistent this season as well. Even though Arsenal fell off in the title race, the Spanish goalkeeper remained excellent at the back. Raya kept 13 clean sheets in 38 games, winning the Golden Glove for a second consecutive season, and also conceded the fewest goals in the Premier League, with a save percentage of 74.2%.

Priced at £5.5m, the Arsenal goalkeeper featured in 32.6% of all FPL teams this season — the highest for a goalkeeper.

4. Mark Flekken | Brentford | 138 points

Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken made a lot of saves this season to keep his team in the top half of the table and in with a chance of securing European football until the very end.

Flekken kept eight clean sheets in 37 games, with a save percentage of 73.4% this season. He also managed to register two assists.

Priced at a low £4.5m, the Dutch goalkeeper has been solid at the back for the Bees — and for those shrewd FPL players who kept him in their teams this season.

5. Dean Henderson | Crystal Palace | 135 points

Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson was another top-performing keeper this season. England’s second-choice goalie kept 11 clean sheets for the Eagles in 38 games, with a save percentage of 66.7%.

Priced at a low £4.6m, Henderson was consistent between the sticks, keeping Palace comfortable in the league table and helping them win the FA Cup.
