Indian Premier League 2026 | Match 18 : Chennai Super Kings vs Delhi Capitals | 19:30 IST, 11 April
Three back-to-back defeats to start their 2026 campaign and 13 in 17 games if you take last season into consideration, morale is significantly low in the CSK camp. Their most recent loss came against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where they were beaten by 43 runs after conceding 250 for 3.
Although their middle-order displayed some spine and helped the team post 207, however, another disappointing showing by the top three meant they never really were in the game and it was just a matter of reducing the margin of defeat more than anything else.
Both Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad were expected to give solid starts, but both have struggled so far. Samson, who was in top form during the recent T20 World Cup, has recorded three single-digit scores in this tournament. While young Ayush Mhatre could not replicate his heroics from the second game.
The pace attack of Anshul Kamboj, Matt Henry, and Khaleel Ahmed has potential but needs better execution on this surface. Kiwi pacer Matt Henry has picked up just two wickets but has conceded at 13 runs per over in his three games. Even their most successful bowler thus far – Anshul Kamboj – has picked up five wickets while going at an economy of 11.44.
Noor Ahmad’s form is also a concern, as he is yet to take a wicket in three games and is conceding 11.10 runs per over. CSK might consider bringing in Akeal Hosein to replace him for this fixture.
Delhi Capitals on the other hand have made a good start to the season, winning two of their first three matches and sit comfortably inside the top four places in the early season standings.
They began their journey with wins over Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians but suffered their first defeat in their last game, going down by a single run to Gujarat Titans. It turned into a close contest, with Delhi falling short of a 211 target after failing to get the required runs off the final two deliveries.
However, given how the team has started their campaign and played in all three games, the DC management shouldn’t read too much into this defeat. Among the batters, Sameer Rizvi has been the most impressive so far, scoring two match-winning half-centuries, including an unbeaten 90 off 51 balls against Mumbai.
Pathum Nissanka has also played his part, providing the team with quick and stable starts. That said, the biggest positive for DC will be KL Rahul coming back to form with a 50-ball 92 after a quiet start to the campaign.
Besides, both David Miller and Tristan Stubbs have also had sufficient time in the middle to set them up for the rest of the tournament. However, the lack of output from the left-handed Indian duo of Nitish Rana and Axar Patel is starting to become a concern.
In the bowling department, T Natarajan, Lungi Ngidi, and Mukesh Kumar have done a wonderful job, picking up 13 wickets between them while keeping the scoring under control. Captain Axar Patel has also chipped in with two wickets and an economy of 7.10. Kuldeep Yadav has taken three wickets at 9.45 and gives them another option in the middle overs.
In terms of weather forecast and pitch report, conditions are expected to be warm and humid in Chennai with little to no chance of rain. With the relaid pitches assisting batters more, the season opener at this venue saw CSK post 209 for 5 batting first, however, Punjab Kings chased the target without much trouble in 18.4 overs.
Looking ahead to this fixture, Delhi Capitals will look to recover after that close loss in their last outing. They have the tools to do so this season, with a deep batting unit and a bowling attack that has done a good job so far. CSK on the other hand will need their batting to come good, especially Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson, as their form will play a big part in how their season goes. The bowling unit must also improve after giving away two 200-plus totals in a row.
If Chennai’s batters step up, this could turn into a close contest, but Delhi’s overall form and better balance give them the edge here.
