FIFA WC26 | SFs: FRA vs ESP| 00:30 IST, July 15, 2026
Two European heavyweights and former World Cup winners France and Spain will battle it out in this high-stakes semi-final encounter. One is an unstoppable force (France) while the other is an immovable object (Spain).
Both France and Spain topped their respective groups and easily secured the Round of 32 qualification. However, Spain has had a tougher route to the semi-finals, having faced Austria, Portugal and Belgium in the previous knockout rounds. In contrast, France had a relatively easier route with Sweden, Paraguay and Morocco. While France has been aggressive and played front foot football, Spain has been stoic in defence and won matches with a lot of resilience and fight.
Looking at their stats, France has scored a whopping 16 goals in six games so far, having conceded only two goals which shows their domination in both the areas of the pitch. Kylian Mbappé has led their attack with a stellar campaign yet again, scoring eight goals so far. Apart from him, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise have been the standout players in attack with Manu Koné marshalling the midfield with aplomb. William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano have been solid in the backline as well. All in all, France remains massive favourites to win the World Cup after missing out narrowly last time.
As for Spain, there were massive expectations from Lamine Yamal to set the World Cup on fire in his debut campaign. However, it hasn’t really worked out for him yet. Rodri in the middle of the park has controlled the tempo of the game while Mikel Oyarzabal has been the attacking threat upfront with four goals for La Roja. In the absence of a proper striker and with Lamine Yamal not contributing with goals, Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino has come to the rescue with two important winners in the knockouts – one against Portugal and the other against Belgium in the quarter-finals with both goals coming late in the game.
Spain’s defensive line has really impressed though as they have conceded only one goal in this World Cup campaign so far and scored 11. France too has a mean defence as they have only conceded two goals in the competition so far. In the knockout stage, France has allowed a total of 18 shots and 1.0 expected goals (xG), while Spain has conceded a total of 20 shots and 1.3 expected goals (xG).
France definitely has the most balanced team in both attack and defence while Spain is relying more on their defence to win them games. Les Bleus is going to be their toughest challenge yet as their attacking line is just superb. Spain’s defensive line will have a tough job on their hands trying to control the attacking quartet of Désiré Doué, Mbappé and Dembélé with Olise playing as a 10 behind Mbappé. Manager Didier Deschamps tactical decision to move Olise from the wings to an attacking midfielder has just taken France from a superb team to an almost unbeatable one. However, Paraguay did show that France can be limited with a deep low-block and tactical fouling although Spain’s playing style is also attractive and they don’t sit in a low block. Spain has always played intricate and quick 1-2 passes to break opposition defences. Food for thought for Spanish coach Luis de la Fluente as it would be really tough stopping this incredible French attack.
From an injury perspective, both teams are fortunate to have their entire squads at their disposal.
Like most knockout games in the quarter-finals ended being cagey and scrappy, we expect this game to be similar in terms of not many chances given to the opposition. Both teams have a threat upfront, hence both defences would be wary of them. Both teams will set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, maintaining defensive stability and relying on counter-attacks to score goals. France has more pacey players in their front line as opposed to Spain and could benefit from this tactic more than their opponents.
The last time these two teams met in the Nations League semi-finals, Spain won 5-4 in a blockbuster high-scoring affair. We don’t expect this one to be as chaotic with end-to-end action considering the importance of this match although we do think France has too much individual quality and firepower to edge out Spain in a tight encounter.
Score Prediction: France 2-1 Spain
