Copa América 2024 Final | Argentina v Colombia | Match Review

Argentina completed a successful defence of their title in the final of the 2024 Copa América, just about edging Colombia in the tie.

Julián Álvarez was presented with an early chance in the game but couldn’t find the target from a drilled cross. Colombia responded after this early opportunity as Jhon Córdoba struck a volley that hit the edge of the post.

The game was then slowed to the end of the first half, and there was a massive moment in the 65th minute as Lionel Messi, seemingly injured, had to be withdrawn and even shed tears as he sat on the bench. His replacement, Nicolás González, thought he had given his team the lead soon after but had his goal ruled out for offside.

With both teams unable to break the deadlock, we headed to extra time, where once again Lautaro Martínez stepped up after coming on as a substitute. He found the corner of the net from a one-on-one situation to seal the tie for Argentina. In doing so, the Inter Milan striker marked his fifth goal of the tournament in six appearances, most of which have seen him come off the bench late on in matches.

Throughout the game, Colombia had more of the ball (56%) and took more shots (19 and 11) but found the target only four times, two occasions fewer than their opponents.
