F1 2026: Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix Preview and Predictions

After an eventful race in Monaco where we saw the youngest ever winner in Monaco, the action doesn’t stop as the grid heads to Barcelona for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. Mercedes’ Kimi Anontelli has made it five wins in a two and looks sublime for and it will take something from the rest of the grid to stop him.

Ahead of the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix 2026 this weekend, here’s our race preview and predictions.

Red Bull showing pace

It was a mixed race for Red Bull in Monaco as Isack Hadjar scored his first podium for Red Bull but Max Verstappen, who started on the front row, didn’t even see the end of lap two due to a technical issue with his car. Verstappen’s power unit issue saw him unable to net a good haul of points but there were plenty of positives for the Austrian team as they left Monaco.

The Red Bull showed strong pace throughout the weekend as both Verstappen and Hadjar started in the top 5 with Verstappen holding provisional pole for the longest time before Antonelli put in a stunning final lap. Verstappen started P2 and Hadjar P6 as Hadjar managed to out-qualify George Russell’s Mercedes and both McLarens. Red Bull were hoping for a strong Sunday and could only get half of it. While Verstappen retired at the very start, Hadjar made up places on the opening lap and put in a strong, measured and experienced drive in the Principality, which would go down well with the Red Bull management.

The Red Bull car showed strong pace, despite not being at its best as Hadjar complained but Hadjar managed to keep the Mercedes of Russell behind and picked up his first-ever Red Bull podium, finishing ahead of both McLarens and Russell. Moving to a more conventional track in Spain, Mercedes and Russell will come back strong but Red Bull have shown that they have a competitive race car and if they can get over their reliability issues, expect Red Bull to have another strong outing in Barcelona.

In a league of his own

For the first time since the end of the Formula One 2023 season a driver won five consecutive races as Kimi Antonelli seems like he’s in a league of his own. Antonelli has begun to run away in the Drivers’ Championship and is 66 points clear of Lewis Hamilton in second place and 68 points clear of his teammate George Russell.

Not only has Antonelli been solid on Sundays, out of his five back-to-back wins, he has picked up pole in four of those races. Apart from Canada, where Russell took pole, Antonelli has taken pole position in all of the races where he has won as he’s shown pace not only over one lap but converted it across the race distance. Antonelli’s biggest positive has been him having a mature head between his shoulders on Sundays. The 19-year old Italian has not panicked or let incidents around him put him off track as he’s gone about doing what is required of him.

The youngster is already writing himself into the history books and will once again be the overwhelming favourite in Spain to stand on the top step of the podium.

Pole prediction: George Russell / Kimi Antonelli

Race winners prediction: Mercedes / Ferrari

Alpine on the rise
One team outside the front runners who have had a strong couple of results in the last couple of races have been Alpine. In a midfield battle where teams are struggling to find consistency, Alpine have managed to score points at every single race this season and it should have been  a podium for Pierre Gasly in Monaco but a post race penalty dropped him the back. Nonetheless, Gasly’s Alpine showed brilliant race pace as the French team stood out in the midfield.

Alpine are now sitting in fifth place, two points clear of Racing Bulls and 20 points clear of Haas. Colapinto qualified in the top 10 in Canada and finished a strong sixth while Gasly qualified in the top 10 in Monaco and finished sixth. The Alpine have a clear edge in competitiveness over the likes of Williams and Haas and are in competition with Racing Bulls on most weekends for the final couple of points places. The Barcelona track has been one where Alpine have generally managed to get on the board to score a decent haul of points and the French team will be looking for another strong weekend in Spain.
