F1 2026: Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix Preview and Predictions
After an eventful race in Monaco, where we saw the Principality’s youngest-ever winner, the action doesn’t stop as the grid heads to Spain for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.
Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli has made it five wins and looks in sublime form. It will take something special from the rest of the grid to stop him.
For the 2026 Formula One Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, here we present our preview and predictions.
Red Bull showing pace
It was a mixed race for Red Bull in Monaco. While Isack Hadjar scored his first podium for Red Bull, Max Verstappen, who started on the front row, didn’t even see the end of Lap 2 due to a technical issue.
Even though the Dutchman’s power unit issue saw him fail to get a good haul of points, there were plenty of positives for the Austrian team as they left Monaco. The RB22 showed strong pace throughout the weekend, with both Verstappen and Hadjar starting in the top five, the former holding provisional pole for the longest time before Antonelli put in a stunning final lap.
Verstappen started P2 and Hadjar P6, the latter out-qualifying Mercedes’ George Russell as well as the McLaren duo. Red Bull were hoping for a strong Sunday but could only get halfway. While Verstappen retired at the very start, Hadjar made up places on the opening lap and put in a strong, measured, experienced drive in the Principality, which would have gone down well with the Red Bull management.
Despite showing strong race pace, the RB22 was far from at its best. Hadjar had his complaints but managed to keep Russell behind him to pick up his first-ever Red Bull podium.
Moving to a more conventional track in Spain, Mercedes and Russell will come back strong, but Red Bull have shown that they have a competitive enough race car, and if they can get over their reliability issues, they can have another strong outing in Barcelona.
In a league of his own
For the first time since the end of the 2023 Formula One season, a driver has won five consecutive races. Kimi Antonelli looks like he’s in a league of his own. The 19-year-old has begun to run away with the Drivers’ Championship and is 66 points clear of Lewis Hamilton in second place and 68 points clear of his teammate, George Russell.
Not only has Antonelli been solid on Sundays, out of his five back-to-back wins, he has picked up pole in four of them — Russell took pole in Canada — showing pace not only over one lap but also converting it across the race distance.
Antonelli’s biggest strength is that he manages to bring a mature head to his shoulders on Sundays. The Italian teenager has not panicked at all, nor has he let incidents around him put him off as he goes about doing what is required of him.
The youngster is already writing himself into the history books and will once again be the overwhelming favourite in Spain to stand on the top step of the podium.
Pole prediction: George Russell / Kimi Antonelli
Race winners prediction: Mercedes / Ferrari
Alpine on the rise
One team apart from the frontrunners who have had strong results in the last couple of races are Alpine. In a midfield battle where teams are struggling to find consistency, the French outfit have managed to score points at every single race this season.
In fact, it should have been a podium for Pierre Gasly in Monaco, but a post-race penalty dropped him back. Nonetheless, Gasly’s A526 showed brilliant race pace, helping Alpine stand out in midfield.
Alpine are now fifth in the Constructors’ standings, two points clear of Racing Bulls and 20 points clear of Haas. Franco Colapinto qualified in the top ten in Canada and finished a strong sixth, while Gasly qualified in the top ten in Monaco and finished sixth, showcasing Alpine’s clear edge in terms of competitiveness over the likes of Williams and Haas, while also being able to take on Racing Bulls on most weekends for the final couple of points places.
The Barcelona track has been one where Alpine have generally managed to get a decent haul of points; they’ll be looking for another strong weekend in Spain this time around.
