Both teams looking to continue winning start
Two teams who have started their World Cup campaigns with confidence-boosting wins take on each other with both in the mix for the eventual trophy as the English women take on the Proteas. The encounter between England and South Africa will be the only game for the day and here’s our match preview and predictions.
Women’s T20 WC 2024 Match 9: England vs South Africa | 19:30 IST, October 7
It wasn’t the best start to their World Cup campaign for the English squad, as they were in a spot of bother when they batted first in their campaign opener against Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi spinners kept a check on the Brits and the English women could only manage 118/7 in their 20 overs with Danni Wyatt-Hodge managing to cross the 25-run mark. The English spinner answered back in style though with Linsey Smith, Charlie Dean and Sophie Ecclestone not only getting regular wickets but keeping the score in check, which saw England restrict Bangladesh to 97/7 in their 20 overs to see them pick up a crucial 21 run win.
South Africa, on the other hand, started their campaign in style against West Indies, with a dominating 10-wicket win. After Nonkululeko Mlaba’s 4-wicket haul along with a tight bowling attack from the Proteas girls which saw them let Windies get to only 118 in their allotted 20 overs, Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits saw home a comfortable chase, scoring half-centuries each to see South Africa start with a big 10-wicket win.
With the game taking place once again in the slow and spin-friendly Sharjah ground, we should be expecting another low-scoring encounter with England holding the slight edge thanks to their spin quartet.
