Match 27 of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season brings us a mouth-watering southern derby between two former champions, as SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) host a resurgent Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Here, we present our preview and predictions for the game.

Indian Premier League 2026 | Match 27: SunRisers Hyderabad vs Chennai Super Kings | 19:30 IST, 18 April 2026

The SunRisers have had a mixed start to their IPL 2026 campaign. While there have been flashes of brilliance with both bat and ball, a run of three defeats in five games has shown their soft underbelly. Their two wins came against bottom-placed Kolkata Knight Riders and, most recently, in the form of a 57-run hammering of the in-form Rajasthan Royals.

The victory against RR was perhaps SRH’s most complete performance this season. Captain Ishan Kishan led the charge with the bat with a fantastic 91 off 44 balls, while the likes of Heinrich Klaasen, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Salil Arora provided ample support.

With the ball, it was newcomers Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain who stole the limelight with their performances. Hinge, in his maiden over in the IPL, bagged three wickets, including getting Vaibhav Sooryavanshi out for a golden duck. Hussain also followed with a wicket in his first over. At one stage, RR were teetering at five wickets down for nine runs. Ultimately, SRH won the match by 57 runs, with Hinge and Hussain taking four wickets each.

Looking at the season as a whole, the biggest disappointment for SRH so far has to be their opening combination. Known for their aggressive starts at the top, Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head have failed to replicate their form from previous seasons. Sharma has scored 129 runs, while Head has scored 120. That said, the Orange Army seem to have a very good, well-rounded batting line-up; they just need Sharma and Head to resume firing at the top.

In terms of their opponents, after finishing bottom of the points table last season, the Chennai Super Kings and their faithful had seemingly lost hope when they began the season with three back-to-back defeats, but it has been a great turnaround from the Men in Yellow. They have won their last two games, both at home at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, albeit their away record still standing at two losses in two.

The comeback started with a spectacular 23-run win against an in-form Delhi Capitals, which CSK followed with a dominating display against bottom-of-the-table KKR. CSK put 192 runs on the board thanks to some decent contributions from the likes of Sanju Samson (48 off 32), Ayush Mhatre (38 off 17), and Dewald Brevis (41 off 29). But it was their bowling unit in particular that got the job done. The bowlers never allowed the Knight Riders to come into play, controlling the Powerplay and middle overs to ultimately restrict them to 160. Noor Ahmad was the pick of the CSK bowlers with three wickets, while Anshul Kamboj bagged two.

So far, the record IPL champions have relied on new signing Sanju Samson and youngster Ayush Mhatre to fire with the bat at the top. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is having a lean patch and has scored only 63 runs in five innings, with Samson leading the charge. Sarfaraz Khan, who was touted as one of the best buys of the recent auction, has shown his potential with 122 runs in four innings, striking at an impressive rate of 182.09.

Shivam Dube has been performing below par, however, while Dewald Brevis has just returned to the playing XI. Jamie Overton has been compensating well for others’ shortcomings, though. Other than scoring 87 runs in three innings, the Englishman has picked up five wickets, including 4/18 against DC to help CSK return to winning ways. Anshul Kamboj is at the top of the pile with ten scalps, having taken two or more wickets barring the game against RCB.

In terms of weather forecast and pitch report, conditions are expected to be hot and humid, with no significant forecast for rain; expect typical scorching April weather in Hyderabad.

The pitch at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium this season is a batting paradise — flat, hard, and with true, consistent bounce that lets batters play their shots freely from the start. 220–260 is a typical score at the venue, though this season the average first-innings score here has been 186, with 2016 being the highest score. Dew is usually not a major factor in Hyderabad during the April–May period, so batting first or second hardly makes any difference.

Looking ahead to this fixture, the Chennai Super Kings are our favourites to beat SunRisers Hyderabad, at least on paper. The Super Kings are coming into this contest with strong momentum, having won their last two games, while the SunRisers, despite their clinical job over the Rajasthan Royals, have been inconsistent with both bat and ball.
