Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will look to put a stop to their recent indifferent form as they lock horns with a rejuvenated and sprightly-looking Mumbai Indians (MI) side who are in must-win territory in this high-stakes encounter.

For Match 54 of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, which will see RCB take on MI, here we present our preview and predictions.

Indian Premier League 2026 | Match 54: Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Mumbai Indians | 19:30 IST, May 10, 2026

The Royal Challengers’ seemingly smooth path to the play-offs has been met with some obstacles, with their sketchy run of form in recent games culminating in what is now a pretty sticky situation for them in terms of qualification for the knockouts.

The latest hindrance arrived in the form of defeat at the hands of the bottom-placed Lucknow Super Giants last night at the Ekana Stadium in a rain-curtailed match, where they failed to chase down 209, falling short by nine runs (based on the DLS method).

This means they stay where they are in the points table, giving the chasing pack behind them another opportunity to close the gap on them. The loss against LSG is RCB’s fourth defeat of the season, the same number of matches they lost in the entirety of last season. They seemed to be in the chase for a vast stretch of the game, but fell one shot short.

They’ll look at two places in particular where they lost the match: a slow Powerplay in which they lost both openers and scored just 45, and then a middle-overs collapse that saw them lose three wickets in the space of 29 runs, just when it felt like they were beginning to take control of the run chase. And despite the 95-run stand between Devdutt Padikkal and skipper Rajat Patidar for the third wicket, the fact remains that it was Tim David’s 17-ball 40 that propelled them this close to the target, and even then the equation was a formidable 20 runs needed off the last over, of which they managed just 10.

RCB’s bowling yesterday seemed a little flat, although they did manage to pull things back a wee bit in the latter stages of the innings. Rasikh Salam, Suyash Sharma, and even Josh Hazlewood in the early stages went for plenty of runs, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Krunal Pandya remained economical, albeit in need of support from the rest of the pack.

For the Mumbai Indians, the return of the talismanic Rohit Sharma has breathed new life into a campaign that was slowly fizzling into nothingness. Sharma returned in dazzling fashion as he and Ryan Rickelton shepherded MI to a comfortable victory against the Lucknow Super Giants. The batting clicked, with Sharma and Rickelton putting on another 100+ opening stand to put their side in firm control of the proceedings.

However, MI will go into this contest against RCB a little light on personnel. If reports are to be believed, Hardik Pandya is still not fully fit from the back spasms that saw him miss the LSG game, while stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav will also miss the game following the birth of his daughter. This could probably mean that Rohit Sharma will lead the side for the first time since 2023.

Both sides come into this contest on opposing ends of the form spectrum, but both need a victory: RCB need a win to make the top two, while MI need the win to stay alive in the play-offs race.

The last time these two sides met each other, RCB piled on a mammoth 240 at Wankhede and emerged victorious by 18 runs despite a late Sherfane Rutherford rally.

While the pressure on both sides to get the win is pretty palpable, we believe RCB are the favourites entering this game given that they still have a much better squad on paper. With MI missing a few key players, this could be a little too much for the record IPL champions.
