Indian professional cricketer Shubman Gill has been announced as a “State Icon” by the Punjab government ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Punjab’s chief electoral officer, Sibin C, has stated that Gill will work on various campaigns to increase voter awareness to “ensure a voting percentage of 70%”. The poll panel has come up with the tagline: “Iss Var 70 Paar“.
Gill isn’t the only State Icon for Punjab; singer Tarsem Jassad has also been given the role.
With this endeavour, Sibin C hopes that first-time voters will be inspired by the two State Icons and “exercise their right to vote”, while also urging other age groups to vote in large numbers.
On the matter, Shubman Gill shared the following statement on social media:
“Honoured to be appointed as the State Icon of Punjab for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. It’s a privilege to encourage and engage our youth in the democratic process. Let’s ensure our voices are heard through our votes!“
