Aston Martin's Stoffel Vandoorne and Felipe Drugovich will stand-in as McLaren's Reserve Drivers as well should the situation arise, following an announcement by both the British Formula One teams. Aston Martin stated that they have come to an agreement with McLaren which will see Vandoorne and Drugovich step-in for the Woking-based team for the first 15 races of the 2023 Formula One season should the situation arise. Stoffel Vandoorne is a previous Formula One driver for McLaren and joined Aston Martin in November 2022 with reigning Formula One champion Felipe Drugovich also having joined the team as a Reserve Driver and also the team's development programme. Aside from Vandoorne and Drugovich, McLaren had earlier roped in Mercedes' Reserve Driver Mick Schumacher also in a similar role should the situation arise. INDY Car champion Alex Palou is McLaren’s Official Reserve Driver.
Mercedes reveal junior driver line-up for 2023
Mercedes have announced a seven-member driver line-up for their Junior Programme for 2023. Amongst the seven are Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Alex Powell, Yuanpu Cui, Luna Fluxá, Kenzo Craige, Paul Aron and Frederik Vesti. While Antonelli, Aron, Powell and Vesti will continue with the team, the team has signed Cui, Fluxá and Craige. Fluxá has competed in the WSK and IAME Euro Series and also won the IAME Euro Series in X30 Mini in 2021. Jamaican Powell, who joined the Mercedes Junior Programme in 2019 finished runners-up in the FIA Karting European Championship last season while Cui has raced in the Andrea Margutti Trophy, WSK Champions Cup and WSK Super Master Series. Craige took part in the Rotax Max Grand Finals and the British Karting Championship in 2021 and has already won the Ultimate Karting Championship Series, British Kartmasters (GP Plate), British Karting Championship (O Plate), and finished as the British Karting Championship Vice-Champion.
