There aren’t enough superlatives to articulate the extent of bravery it must have taken for Daniels to make this decision, that too at the very beginning of his career. After all, there’s a reason there haven’t been any openly gay male footballers in the UK in over three decades; there are very few of them across the world at all. Unlike its female counterpart, men’s football is plagued by homophobia to its very core. Troubled by the prospect of having to endure abuses and vile chants their entire lives, players have for long chosen to live closeted, lead a life of lies and refrain from simply being who they truly are. Even in retirement, very few footballers have chosen to come out and try to foster an environment that would encourage people of the LGBTQ+ community to live openly. It hasn’t been easy, however. Societal discriminations percolate into sporting communities, as is their wont. Matters of abuse on racial, communal and religious grounds have only recently become subjects of import, and even slower is the rate at which changes take effect. It is no surprise, therefore, that having openly gay male footballers in the game is almost unheard of, let alone being something that should have long been normalised.

With the 4-4-2 becoming more and more redundant in modern football, a myriad of formations and positional tweaks mean wide men now are a different specimen to the classic crossers and providers of the 1990s. The modern-day wingers have a lot on their plate considering the tasks given to them on both ends of the pitch, making it one of the most difficult and vital positions in the sport. These days, they’re goalscorers, pressers, raumdeuters and much more. While the overall criteria for judging wingers remain the same as before, nowadays, they are evaluated based on their goal-scoring abilities and contribution to the team’s build-up play in addition to their dribbling and delivering abilities.
Liverpool recently registered an essential win at Villareal to make the Champions League final. The possibility of the side possibly winning the FA Cup, the Champions League and the Premier League, having already won the League Cup this season, is a testament to the quality of the players that the side field week in, week out. Among the extensive squad that the Reds boast, the following are my top five Liverpool players of the season. Mohamed Salah This season, there probably has not been a more prolific player than Mo Salah in Europe, let alone in England. The Egyptian has netted on 22 occasions this season in the league and has scored 8 times in the Champions League. He will be crucial to Liverpool's hopes of winning the European crown. Salah not only scores but also provides his teammates with opportunities to score. He has 12 assists in the league so far. In order for a player to score, they must first give themselves the best chance to do so. Salah does that by being available in the box or driving into the penalty area. He averages nearly 11 touches in the opposition box per 90'. He also averages nearly 4 shots per 90' this season, giving him a decent chance of finding the net on at least one occasion per game.
